Paint Table Saturday 278 - Completed Skeletons

Hi All,

Well, I'm sorry about the extra spotty posting of late. Track Season and being sick have effected hobby output across the board. Although I didn't finish the figures I had planned to do, I managed to fulfill my 200 point obligation to the Old World Army Challenge.

I am at that point of the year where I am frustrated with a lot in life. To use a cliche, I'm not sure I'm living my "best life." Anyway, I'm taking a break from social media etc for now to try and really accomplish my hobby goals. If you're curious about how I painted these I encourage you to read it on the Old World blog. It's very straight forward and easy.

Paint Table Saturday 276 - Cultists, Orks and Beastmen join the Undead

Hi All,

With Track Season in full swing I seem to have less time to actually blog. Last Saturday my son ran a 5K and this Sunday he will be running a 3K.

So I've been plugging away at the plastic zombies

and skeletons.

I should have been prepping the Skull and Crown "archers" but I took the path of least resistance and kept on working on things that were primed/started.

I also started digging through the collection to look for the bits I need for this summer's Realm of Chaos renegade game at Warhammer World. A couple of Orks

and some plastic Cultists made it onto the table, [In both cases they came with paint jobs that will need to be stripped.]

as well as a box of Gors I purchased to convert into "Beastmen in Spaaaaace!"

Paint Table Saturday 274 - Actual painted figures

Hi All,

It seems like I always finish models sometime during the week and then always forget to share them with you all on PTS.

I have had to wait 24 hours to share them here due to the rules of the Old World Army Challenge. If you like seeing painted figures you should check that blog out.

So here they are:

5 Death Riders. From a black base coat I drybrushed using my Reaper Bone Triad. I enjoyed doing the verdigris helmets and skull design, although in a rush to finish the shields I seem to have wiped off the Spectral Glow wash a little more than I'd like.

The Skull Chucker and crew were also built up from a black undercoat. For my rusted metal effect I used craft paint (Charcoal Grey, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Orange, Bright Orange) followed by a drybrush of Blackened Steel.

Lastly, 3 Skeleton Warriors from the old Skeleton Regiment box. The person who sold me these also had the metal command conversion blister and the metal coffin lid shields. These were base coated in white and, more or less, painted following the Skeleton Painting guide in White Dwarf 142.  I put a 2 part Sepia, 2 part Yellow Orange and 1 part water; ink mix onto these. I then went back and slathered them in Burnt Umber ink because the Yellow overpowered the Sepia. Then the figures were drybrushed up the same as the ones that were undercoated black. I like this method of painting bone better as I feel like it gives a more, flesh off the bone look.

With all the figures I used my Grunge wash recipe liberally over everything to give them that dirty look. I ran out of time late Thursday night to finish the flocking on the bases. I will rectify that.

What's on the table this week?

I'm thinking of painting the Zombies and the Skeleton Archers. As you can see, I still need to prep the Triumph of Death figures I'm using. Perfect project for watching a Super Bowl with two teams I couldn't care less about.

The Advanced Heroquest figures, or perhaps even the Harlequins in the background, still stare accusingly at me. I do need to keep working on my Imperial Guard (whose ignominious defeat will be chronicled soon) as well as some projects for later this Summer.

Paint Table Saturday 267 - The Dead Shall Rise

Hi All,

Wow! It's been awhile since I've post a Table report. That was not the plan.

Here is the Army I'm assembling for the Old World Army Challenge. I of course over bought and so have way more than 1000 points here, but you get the idea.

This is my setup in the garage. I'm trying to relocate my hobby stuff in there to stop taking over the whole house. It is now very cramped in there.

I plan on using a mixture of Games Workshop, Reaper, Mantic, Skull and Crown, and Upstream Games House miniatures in this army.

I'll post up a better look of the units in the coming weeks. As you can see I have a lot of assembly to do before January 1st and I need to write up my starting post for the OWAC.

Paint Table Saturday 260 - Dwarf Brewmeister and others

Hi All,

Close to being finished on the Dwarf Brewmeister.

The goblins are figures that I finished a long time ago that needed their bases touched up. Then a couple of hero forge figures I have on slow burn.

Aidan had his final regulation Cross Country race of the season. Ran an unofficial 11:29 3K. Came in first place with a 9 second PR. Building off a great track and field season.

Paint Table Saturday 257 - Primed the Umber Hulks

Hi All,

Primed the Umber Hulks with craft paint and brushed it on. If I added water to thin the paint it would bead on the plastic. So it took a long time to get good coverage on each model. I still have to go back in with a small brush and hit all the little spots that somehow didn't get paint in them.

I intend for these to be rough drybrush along the theme of the other monsters I did, so not the exact color as the Knightmare Ambulls. We'll see how it goes, I have to look back at those posts to remind myself of the paints used.

Paint Table Saturday 253 - Space Apes

Hi All,

Although the progress has been minimal, there has been some.

I may have some finger grease on the lens. I think I also need to try auto focus, my eyes don't work well enough for manual focus.

I got the uniforms and flesh base color done on almost all of them. I missed an ear or two (not all of them have ears showing) and their fingers and toes can be tricky to find when they're primed black.

No added work on the Umber Hulks.

You may also see some Uscarl squats on the bench. I needed to make room in my washtub for the Umber Hulks, so they are not necessarily next.

Our plan is to write up 500 point forces for the sequel to the Wizard Battle, but we'll see what points value makes sense once we run the numbers. Of course we could just throw stuff down on the table, but I want my son to get the full experience of Oldhammer. Back then I made way more lists than I ever played games. I think it also gets you looking through the books more to find the special rules and points values for things.

Paint Table Saturday 252 - Probably a bad idea

Hi All,

Not a lot of progress this week, but I have a plan for what I want to paint.

I had already been planning to paint the Eureka gibbons. I added the last space ape to them as I feel like, size wise, he matches them.

I'm also try to prep 10 of these Nolzur's D&D miniatures for the Ambull Safari scenario. Looking at them now, I'm seeing a lot of mold lines. I've started trimming them off with an X-acto knife. They appear to be coated in something to help them take paint. Of course my trimming the mold lines is peeling that off, so we shall see if it causes problems.

Over on the OWAC facebook group some people are chomping at the bit to have a group painting "challenge" again. So I've signed on with these 20 figures to do a mini thing. I'm not super into it, but I'm trying not to be a stick in the mud.

Paint Table Saturday 249 - Team Terra, Safari Giant and Space Apes

Hi All,

For some reason there don't seem to be enough hours in the day lately. We've all been getting back into the swing of being at school and it has been pretty hot temperature-wise. We are finally getting some rain though.

Anyway here are the same figures, in more or less the same state that they were in last time I showed them to you.

I also got out my various Eureka apes to finish the ground work on and perhaps base coat later today.

I'll try to be better about posting regularly and getting everyone caught up on the WFRP campaign. I also want to get back to the Oldhammer in the New World Zine. There's talk of another event in the Jerz in November.

Paint Table Saturday 246 - Cyclops and Cabinets

Hi All,

Very little painting progress as I wrestled with installing some cabinets and a workbench in my garage.

The Cyclops got a couple of base coats of Reaper Tanned Shadow. It was a relatively easy and mindless thing to do while we watched Post Nuclear Holocaust themed movies. Team Terra is giving me pause for color choices, mostly the diminutive leader. There is a lot going on around his head and neck.

The cabinets I ordered, that came early and I had to leave my son at swim lessons while I raced home to receive the palette. Never fails. Mostly level and square. I also finally put the insulation in the metal garage door. Now all I need is some more lighting, a portable A/C unit and some shelves to help me organize all the junk still in the garage.

Still quite a bit of sorting and cleaning to do. Wish me luck.

Paint Table Saturday 245 - Team Terra, Galactic Police

Hi All,

After seeing Mario's post I realized I had forgotten to share this weeks painting progress with you.

These are mostly Foundry old Rogue Trader sculpts. On the right you can see my Hero Forge Shadow Run inspired Half Orc Street Samurai, a Judge Dredd Psy Judge and Psycho Sam, who I named Dahn Alt Rump. He's there as a color guide. As you can see we have a Red, White and Blue theme going on. Their job is to find Xeno scum and eliminate them. They're not very nice.

In the close up it may be hard to tell, but the photo is taken on my new gamecraft paint tray with the led attachment light providing the lighting. I adjusted levels in Snapseed, but it came out pretty well.

Not too much else to report. I'm finally clearing out my garage, so hopefully I'll be able to have more game reports from home soon. Amongst the finds? 3.5 computer disks, piles of old power supplies and computer cables and an emerging termite nest that was boring up through a crack in the concrete into a box of books.

Still a lot of work to go, but I feel pretty good about getting over the inertia that comes with looking at a big room full of junk and not knowing where to begin.

Paint Table Saturday 241 - Necromunda terrain

Hi All,

Not much to report on the actual hobby front. I haven't gotten back into a groove since returning from vacation. So the hobby has fallen on the back burner a tad.

I did manage to get all the Bulkheads, Doors and barricades from the new Necromunda terrain boxes cut off the sprue.

I'm having a little bit of indecision about how to paint them. I kind of want to do rust, but then I've really been wanting to do some verdigris. Maybe I can spot do it on the hatches or something.

I also need to print out some suitable Necromunda posters and come up with some graffiti.

I also finally went to check out Funkatronic Rex. I bought the Sector Imperialis Objectives while I was there. Not a ton of tabletop wargaming space, but the owner seemed nice and it might be a way to meet some people and have some room to set up a game to play with my son.

Junior Olympic State Championships is this weekend. More just to keep in shape for USATF Nationals than planning to go on to JO Regionals. Top 4 qualify, but he hates running at altitude and the Regionals will be in Colorado.

Paint Table Saturday 236 - Those trees and Camp Followers

Hi All,

Still working on cleaning up the hobby lair and trying to finish up some things so I can take my final army pictures for the Old World Army Challenge. If you haven't already you should really check it out.

All the tree bases are finished. I just need to put foliage on the three bare trees and then spray them with hairspray or something. The clump foliage ones are shedding pretty bad.

I also finally started blocking in colors on the peasants and monk altar guards. The monks are wearing funky ceremonial robes in the red and blue of Monfel. Mongeaux, on the right is getting the fair skin tone. Blanche Neige will be getting the rosy skin tone when I unbury it.

Paint Table Saturday 234 - Odds and ends, finished Bretonnians

A quick one before we rush off to the last regulation meet of the season.

Just trying to tie up loose ends. Safari giant is now primed. Peasants and Monks are just about ready, but I still need to build the wagon and War Altar. Broke out me old trees to try and finish them up. The Army photo will be composed soon.

Paint Table Saturday 232 - Very little progress

Hi All,

This week seemed to be filled with everything but hobby time. My son ran an amazing 3000m this morning and may have qualified for the National meet later this Summer. I'll know for sure tomorrow.

I mostly painted the horse flesh and underneath the caparisons, so it doesn't look like much has happened.

I added a chimney, finished tiling the roof, and then put some active mesh in the windows to act as window leading. This is not in the original build instructions, I just thought it would look nice.

I also received my foam coat from Hotwire Foam Factory to try and put a protective coating on my Mighty Fortress.

Paint Table Saturday 231 - Must stay focused

Hi All,

Well I had to take my Mulligan in March. The track meet and the Easter Holiday just sucked up my time and wore me out. Minimal progress this week, but closer to the end. I'm starting to feel the pull of other projects and got sucked into the idea of adding a War Altar, but on to the pictures.

Pretty much finished the highlighting. Need to do their mouths but I was getting confused as to who had their mouth open. As I age my vision has gone very weird. I have been near sighted all my life, but have recently found it increasingly difficult to focus in my normal near range. I had to break out the optivisor to confirm who was close lipped in this bunch. The check pattern is still a tad wonky, but I'm going to go with it. It's a toy, not a museum display piece. The horse flesh needs to be painted and the models based. Similarly the field gun needs some more work. Not shown is the baggage train and additional camp followers. I'll use the two laborers as part of the five and then some Reaper Townsfolk for the other three.

While I was looking for things to make my baggage element I found the various wagons and Carts that Richard "Orclord" Hale gave me. These had apparently been damaged in shipping to him and he gave them to me to help with my caravan scenario. Which of course I had also forgotten about. I believe this and the other things were painted by John Blanche. I want to do my best to just restore them and mount them on sturdier bases perhaps.

As I start to lose focus and think about the Caraz Lumbar scenario from the Siege rule book, I refound the plastic toy I want to use for the giant. I need to shave off some mold lines and I'm not sure if I'll strip, just spray primer over the current paint job or just paint directly over it. Decisions, decisions. The Mantic Dwarf casualty is just there as a lark. I found him looking for the Reaper Townsfolk Monk figures I want to use for the Bretonnian War Altar. No luck finding them of course. Benoit is there for scale.

My Uscarl squats also arrived in the mail, along with Jason Lye's sci fi Slayer figure. The guns on these seem a little flat, so I've ordered some autoguns from Maxmini. I also ordered some accessories for making the war altar. The Eureka space apes and gibbons were also thrown in there because I had originally meant to do Ape-ril. Gah!

Last, but not least, I started putting my Ambull scenario figures into the Battlefoam cases I bought. As per usual the stock trays don't always organize the figures the way I would like. I may use JB's technique here to make my own instead of buying more. Funny how you become aware of relevent posts after you make a big purchase. Oh well.

Paint Table Saturday 230 - I wish I were done. (Bretonnians)

Hi All,

Somehow the week has gotten away from me and I am perilously close to using my Mulligan for the month of March.

I got a little farther than this picture last night, highlights on all the red, white, blue, black and yellow. As you can see I still need to paint random flesh, pouches, legs, shirts and base all the horses and canon.

It will be a tall order

One of the other coaches had a family emergency, so I am filling her role of making sure the kids are ready for events at the meet. 8AM - 4PM today. Doesn't leave a lot of time for painting.

Paint Table Saturday 227 - Knights and a barn.

Hi All,

I was having a conversation the other day about finding more sets/ pieces of the original foam Mighty Fortress and the idea of painting what you have before buying more of the same came up. There was also a side discussion about buying versus building and what materials make the best terrain. Those are sides to the main idea here.

I broke out some unfinished models that I had started 1990ish before I got bogged down in college and drifted away from the hobby.

First up though, lets look at the figures for this week.

Not as far along as I'd like but I got the knights cleaned and assembled. I also primed two of the cannon crew and the two laborers. The gunner needs a little bit of putty to fix a nasty mold line in his helmet. As I told you previously, he seemed to have a mismatched mold half or something. There was a significant mold line and a difference of about a millimeter in height on some parts.

I also brought out some Foundry Rogue Trader models and even some plastic Blood Bowl Orcs (not pictured).

But then I got a tad distracted by terrain.

The barn from a White Dwarf Article. I've carted it around in a box between four states for the last 28 years or so.

I finally started putting a roof on it this week. I did start to equivocate about making playable interiors but then decided I had been putting things off for too long. So I'm gittin er dun!

Paint Table Saturday 226 - Knights, Ordonnance and random stuff

Hi All,

Still can't seem to find the time or energy to post to the blog as much as I'd like. I meant to schedule this post for Saturday, but didn't have time. I was at a track meet for about 12.5 hours yesterday because our team had the concession stand.

On to the table.

Cleaning up the Bretonnian artillery crew and basing them. There was a lot of flash and the gunner appeared to have the mold halves mismatched as there was a millimeter height difference on one side of the mold line in some places. You can also see some of the plastic knights horses that I had a dust up about on facebook. More on that later.

Pulled out some Foundry Ex-Citadel Sci-Fi figures to spice up the paint queue. Finally sawed the nubbin off the back of the space suit head guy so I could put a Dragon Forge backpack on him.

The two Reaper figures and the two C02 Wizards that stare at me accusingly.

I also started cutting bits off the sprue for the Pegasus Chemical Plant and put some Spackle on some old cardboard river sections I started back in 1990.

Beware, Rant below:

So, facebook. As you know I'm doing this army challenge where we are painting up 200 points worth of troops according to either 3rd edition or 4th edition Warhammer Fantasy Battle. It has been a real challenge for me as I normally paint at a glacial pace and get very nit picky about things that people may never even see.

One of my plastic horses is horribly miscast. I'm not sure I can fix it to a level I would be comfortable with. So I took a picture of a good copy and asked on the Oldhammer in the New World facebook group if anyone had one they could spare.

Apparently my picture of the good one caused some confusion, as people seemed to think that the water droplets from cleaning were the miscast I was speaking of. I then tried to show a side by side comparison of two of the same model, one good and the miscast one that had been cut off the sprue. Problem solved, right?

For some reason a guy, who I did not know and had never seen a single comment or post from before, seemed to be questioning my hobby. Whats wrong with the model? Why can't I just sand, file, putty it? Isn't this just all part of the hobby? To me it came across as trolling.

So I fired off a response that was snarky, to be fair, but that I tried to not be super confrontational. I asked him who he was "in the hobby" and why he came across as so condescending. When he first commented I didn't recognize his name so I looked him up. 6 months in the group and two pictures in his profile, nothing whatsoever to do with the hobby.

Apparently "in the hobby" was a trigger for him because he wrote a paragraph tirade in response, showed a picture of his floor to ceiling collection and then blocked me. According to him his responses had been that he was offering to show me how to sculpt the missing parts of the caparison or look through his massive collection to find a replacement for me. Nothing he said in his original posts gave me that impression, but I can't see it now to verify.

I sat on his response for a little, as I didn't want to inflame things more and tried to think of a way to be conciliatory, we seem to have misunderstood each other etc, but by that time he had me blocked. I did fire off a response just to tell my side of it that may also have come off as a little snobby because I referenced people whose names everybody knows as an example of who I'd take criticism from.

The point is, I'm not opposed to people teaching me things in the hobby. I know my skill set is limited and I could stand to improve in all areas. I also understand that I could have just asked if anybody had a spare horse, the reasons why I needed it were superfluous and only seemed to confuse several people. What I will not tolerate though is somebody I do not know and never heard of being a prick. Perhaps he didn't mean it, perhaps he thought he was being helpful. It came off as mild trolling.

So there you have it.

Paint Table Saturday 224 - Progress on Bretonnians and Wizards

Hi All,

The weeks seem to be flying by. I'm getting a little bit of hobby time in the evenings while we watch the Winter Olympics. I've never really been very engaged in the Olympics in general but I'll follow on occasion.

Anyway, put paint on a few areas here and there.

Did all the base flesh, base and highlights on the padded leather and a base coat for the Blue. As you can see I went with a Blue outer robe for Holbon Toddlebrew. What may not be as clear is that I over painted the old flesh on all the retainers and wizards with Reaper Tanned Shadow, partly to be challenge compliant and partly because I feel like the old flesh color is a caricature of itself. For Mazda I tried the Fair flesh tone. I want him pale, but I didn't want to do more Vampiric flesh.

The other thing I tried just yesterday was putting down a layer of Orange Brown over the Grey primer and then putting the Marigold Yellow on. I think it works better than multiple coats of Marigold Yellow that just leave me frustrated.

I just realized that I forgot to share the finished Ape pictures on the G+ page, so I'll do that.

Happy Year of the Dog. We went out for Lunar New Year dinner last night with friends, it was great.
