WFRP 4th edition - Character Creation

Hi All,

I've had some down time so I had a chance to finish fleshing out the character that I started a few weeks ago for our transition to 4th edition WFRP. If you go to my WFRP page on the blog you will find links to youtube of our actual play. We just finished The Thousand Thrones campaign. It only took us several years and 54 episodes.

I referenced this post from The Ginger Noob to guide me through the process of character creation. Honestly, the rule book does a pretty good job of walking you through the process, but it's nice to have a reference.

I give you Johannes Knappen.

I started this character a couple of weeks ago, and was taking notes of my rolls etc to do a similar walk through post, but then of course I left those notes at home and finished the character without them or writing things down.

I have 3 extra points to distribute between Fate and Resilience. I was thinking to make both my fate and resilience 3, but I don't really know how resilience works yet. I also haven't written down my ambitions, but they may develop from the 10 questions that you're supposed to ask yourself to flesh out your character.

These are mine:

Ten Questions to flesh out your WFRP character.

1. Where are you from?

From the town of Hupeberg at the foot of the Grey Mountains.

2. What is your family like?

The Knappen family has recently come into the academic class. Peer Knappen was the son of an Imperial officer and Katrin the daughter of farmers. They met as students in Altdorf and returned to their home town Hupeberg upon graduation. Johannes’ younger brother Karl “Shwartzkopf” is studying Bright magic in Altdorf.

3. What was your childhood like?

My parents always stressed education and encouraged me and my brother to go to school and become academics as well.

4.Why did you leave home?

To pursue further studies as an apothecary.

5. Who are your best friends?

Ulli, a fellow apothecary student from home and Sigismund, a brawler and gambler from the Inn that Johannes and Ulli carouse in.

6. What is your greatest desire?

To unlock the secrets of potion making and rid the world of disease.

7. What are your best and worst memories?

My best memory is completing my goal of becoming an Apothecary’s apprentice. My worst memory is being unable to keep my mother from dying of the bloody flux.

8. What are your religious beliefs?

Like all good citizens of the Empire I observe the rites of Sigmar, but I pray to Shallya to help me heal others.

9. To whom, or what, are you loyal?

I am loyal to my friends, family, and the Emperor of course.

10. Why are you adventuring?

To uncover the secrets that will rid the world of disease.

So if you've seen any of my previous characters or listened to our game play, you'll note that this is a bit of a departure from my normal type. Usually I play a guy who hacks stuff with a sword and asks questions later.

I'm not sure how dooming works in this game, hopefully I get one that I can get my head around for gameplay purposes.

What's everybody else playing?

Our WFRP Campaign on Youtube.

Hi All,

Sorry for not posting in awhile, life has a way of getting in the way of hobby stuff. I've been meaning to share this list of youtube videos from our WFRP campaign. Michal has given me permission to post them here and I will set up a page to post the links for easy reference. I joined the group somewhere towards the end of the "Heralds of Woe" campaign. I'm not sure which session yet. The sessions are about 3 hours each. I've toyed with the idea of stripping the audio and editing them down to 1 hour chunks for a podcast format. But honestly I don't know if I have the stamina for that.

Any way, here's the list:

WFRP 2nd Ed - Terror in Talabheim (Why did it have to be a Zombie Dragon?)

Hi All,

The next few installments in our WFRP campaign. We last left off here if you need a refresher. I was going to give you the last three reports, wrapping up the campaign, but the last two are in bullet format and I'm going to have to listen to the playback of the sessions to flesh them out for you.

You can listen to them yourself at Xathrodox86's Game Den.

Feb 4, 2018 (Why did it have to be a Zombie Dragon?)

Lukas has headed to Dankerood to speak with the General. He will convey all we have learned about the Ratmen's plans and encourage him to attack the planned raiding parties. He will also encourage the General to keep Genaro safe, if possible, as he may have some invaluable intelligence on the production of the war machines.

Lukas has left Talabheim without much fuss after the sword and sanitarium raids. On his way to Dankerood he witnesses the sacking of a small village by the Ratmen. 15 older people are fed to the Rat Ogres. The younger people are put in chains and led back to the city. The Skaven also take all the food and livestock with them. All Lukas can do is hide and watch. He is far from the city and by himself.

As he approaches Dankerood some camouflaged Imperial scouts emerge out of the undergrowth. “Halt! Who goes there?” one demands. Lukas introduces himself as one of the resistance fighters with important information for the General. He is told “the General awaits with interest.”

The 5 scouts all seem very nervous. Dankerood is as Lukas remembers it, fortified with small cannons and soldiers. But the soldiers are tired, dirty and tattered. Eventually they make their way to an old nobles retreat in the town. It is the grandest manor in Dankerood and houses the General's HQ. Lukas is left in the care of the General's guards and is brought into his rooms.

General Jorg Hafner sits at a table eating. He looks slightly disheveled, like he has the weight of the world on his shoulders. As Lukas enters, the General nods to a chair. “Please sit,” he says. He turns to a servant and asks him to bring food for Lukas. “Alright Private, please give your report.” Lukas is brought a bowl of yeast and bacon.

Lukas tells the General about the building of the war machines to launch poison spheres at the army outside the crater. He talks up Genaro's value as a source of information about what is being built. Lukas shares that an attack on the raiding parties might break the skaven morale. He also recounts the in fighting among the skaven that the group has witnessed and the information gained from Godford. The General stops him there. “Finish your meal, then sit with the scribe. You will stay the night.”

General Hafner is concerned about the raid that Lukas witnessed. He has listened to what Lukas had to say about Genaro and will redirect Sgt Van Zandt and his outriders to intercept the wood gathering party. Sgt Utter and his scouts will ambush the slaver party. If the deem things unsafe, however, they will not risk themselves for Genaro.

The General then asks what the group has done inside Talabheim. He wants results! Enemy commanders dead! War machines destroyed, and the gates opened! “You should contact the Temple of Myrmidia and the Dwarves in the Stone House.” He then suggests communicating a coordinated attack with signal flares.

The Dragon roars, rears back on its hind legs and comes down on the group in an avalanche of rotted muscle and bone. Sally hides behind a pillar to the left and Leopold a pillar to the right. Vincent advances on the dragon and it's claws miss him by a cat's whisker. Sally is swatted across the room, splintering a door as he crashes into it. The smell of brandy pervades his nostrils as, to his horror, he realizes the bottle in his backpack has been broken. Leopold tries to roll right again as a large cloud of pestilential air is breathed out by the dragon. It hits the pillar he was behind and appears to corrode it and the floor. It's as if they have aged 100's of years in a matter of seconds. Gugula Skell laughs maniacally atop the great wyrm.

Sally sees feet shuffling as he lies there in a heap. The room he has been knocked into is full of zombies. Sally does a back roll out of the doorway. Yavandir and Yorn are trying to get to another door on the other side of the room. Silka tries to flank the dragon behind a pillar. Leopold puts his sword back in his belt and takes aim at the necromancer with his pistol. Vincent also takes aim at her. She somehow senses his action and points her hand at him. The dragon's roar drowns out whatever it is she is saying. Vincent's shot misses and he is barely missed by a ray of black energy emanating from her outstretched hand. It dissolves the beam next to him. The double doors at the end of the room suddenly come crashing down and the zombies pour in over the hastily constructed barricade.
The dragon to his front, hundreds of zombies behind, Sally rushes into the great room and dashes for another pillar to hide behind. The dragon starts to puff up to make another breath as Leopold prays to Sigmar and fires off his pistol. The bullets aim is true, but the ball ricochets off some unseen force. Leopold is miraculously able to dodge the corrosive cloud. It is apparent that the dragon is now after him and the necromancer glares in his direction as she prepares another spell.

Vincent prays to Morr and raises his sword with both hands to attack the necromancer and dragon. He is being surrounded by zombies as he does so. Sally feels inspired by Vincent's courageous act, but fears it may be his last. Sally grabs Silka and tries to head for Yavandir and Yorn. Leopold, lying on the floor, scrambles to get up and get behind the next pillar. He almost makes it but is clipped by one of the dragon's fangs as it tries to bite him in half. He suffers a nasty gash down the length of his left arm, it is now useless and he loses grip of his hammer. The impact of the blow sends him sprawling across the floor to where Yavandir and Yorn are standing.

It is now time for Vincent to fulfill his prophecy. He tries to take advantage of the dragon's preoccupation with Leopold to launch his attack. He wants to directly attack the necromancer but realizes he cannot reach her. He tries to run up the dragons back to get her but misses and is swatted by the dragon's tail. Vincent slides across the room in the opposite direction as Leopold and ends up near Sally and Silka. Sally tries to push forward toward Yorn and Yavandir, Silka says they must stay where they are. Vincent, still stunned from the blow, lies on the ground in a heap.

Leopold sees that the chamber is now also flooded with zombies. He stumbles toward the door where Yavandir and Yorn were standing. They are running down the corridor inside. With his arm dangliing useless at his side, Leopold hurries off after them. On the other side of the great hall Vincent slowly gets up. The dragon and necromancer are mad, but are targeting Sally and Silka behind him. He moves behind the pillars, trying to follow them. Sally can feel the dragon and necromancer behind him as he runs. The dragons breath sweeps behind them, destroying pillars, and giving them the incentive to run faster. The three make it to the door on the left side, Sally smashes trough it and they continue to run down the corridor behind it.

Blinded by pain, Leopold continues to run down the corridor until he comes to an open door at the far end. He almost bumps into Yavandir and Yorn.

Vincent sees Sally and Silka go through the doorway and is few feet behind. He waits for a gap between dragon breaths and runs full tilt for the door. He is able to slide through the door as pestilential breath and dark sorcery destroy walls and furniture.

Leopold catches his breath. The bleeding in his arm has stopped but he still feels it. Yorn seems surprised to see him still alive. “We need to move, now.” he says. Behind them they can see the corridor filling with zombies. “Let's go!” Yorn says as he and Yavandir begin to run. Leopold doesn't think about it and follows.

Sally, Silka and Vincent are in a small round chamber that is marked by dragon's breath and magic. Silka wonders aloud, “How did she get that thing?” Sally is impatient to keep moving, the zombies are still coming. As they run, Vincent and Silka strategize about how to get Skell off of the dragon. As they argue about whether or not to try and escape by jumping out a window, they feel a huge tremor, like a huge object crashing through a wall. Windows shatter and furniture topples. It is quickly followed by another quake.

Meanwhile, back with Leopold, Yavandir has suddenly grown balls and wants to kill the dragon. Leopold firmly says no. Yavandir then tries to shame Leopold with a potted theology lesson about Sigmar. Leopold is not having it. “I don't have a magic dwarven hammer!”

Sally looks for something to make a rope to help them descend from a window. Vincent and Silka discuss what to do. They agree they can only leave after they have killed the necromancer. They know that the palace is damaged on the North West side. They form a plan to try and get there, but at first are not sure where they are in the palace. They are somewhere in the middle. Meanwhile Leopold is also looking for a way out.

Sally, Silka and Vincent finally get their bearings and head for the North West corner of the palace. Silka says some of the Skaven weapons may have weakened that side of the palace. She had heard that entire rooms have collapsed. Vincent and Silka talk about trying to catch the dragon there. Sally just runs.

Leopold has lost his sense of direction (botched a navigation roll). As they amble around zombies begin to swarm them. Yavandir yells “To arms, the enemy is upon us!” Leopold is attacked by a trio of the undead, Yavandir and Yorn five each. The necromancer is trying to zero in on us. The ambush feels unnatural. In his weakened state, Leopold decides to run for it. A zombie with silverware for fingers misses him as he runs past.

As they near the North West corner, Sally reminds Vincent “If I stay with you, remember this.” They eventually reach a part of the palace that appears battle scarred. The farther they go into this section they see that many men and rats have died. The rooms are very damaged. Scorched and blown up. They finally make it to what looks to be the Countess's audience chamber. There is a wrecked throne at the end and there are many pictures of her ancestors strewn about. The columns all look damaged, and there is still a strong smell of spilled blood in the room. It was obviously the last stand of the Countess's troops.

A chilled wind howls through the smashed high windows of the chamber. Sally looks around, considering making ropes out of the drapes. The crashing noise seems to be getting closer. Sally's sixth sense is working overtime. Out of the corner of his eye, Sally sees something under the rubble. A bronze cylinder with a torn leather hose. There is a strong chemical smell emanating from it. Silka wonders how the device works. Sally recalls that it is the same weapon used by the Skaven firing squad. He shudders slightly. It doesn't seem to have any solid ammunition. Vincent wants to try to and shoot it or set it on fire to blow up the dragon.

Silka and Vincent quickly rig up and light some torches and then make a trail of fuel leading to the tank. The liquid is semi transparent and has a strong smell. They drag the tank in front of the door. The crashing sound is getting closer. Silka and Sally take cover near the end of the chemical trail with pistols and torches at the ready. Vincent stands in the open to act as bait. He yells, “Over here beast!” The door explodes, showering Vincent with bits of wood and stone. In the cloud of dust Sally and Silka can see the crazy, heroic, Vincent standing with a sword in one hand and a burning torch in the other.

Gugula Skell begins to monologue. “I will send you to meet Morr. I will live forever. I'm tired of this game. I'm going to kill you now. Any last words?” With that Sally lights the liquid. The flame whooshes past Vincent towards the canister. Vincent dashes to the left as the dragon swipes a foul claw past him. As the flames reach the canister the necromancer's mouth is twisted in the black tongue of another dark incantation.

See you next time...

Well there you have it. I have been painting a bit and thinking about getting back to the New World Zine. I find my drive comes in fits and starts. The more I hobby the less time I find for other projects.

Thanks for looking and commenting.

WFRP 2nd Ed - Terror in Talabheim (more catching up)

Hi All,

Things are winding down as I get ready for Summer Vacation and Kublacon. It occurred to me that I hadn't updated how our WFRP campaign has been going in quite some time, so I'll try to do that in dribs and drabs over the coming months.

If you ever want to hear the games as they happened, the GM has them as a screen capture video on Youtube here. If you don't remember where the story was before this, I blogged about it here.

Here are a few drawings by Jason B. depicting some of the events of the previous sessions.

Leopold and Vincent enjoying themselves at Talabheim's Central Registry.

Lukas kills a Rat Ogre with one blow!

Vincent carries Leopold up the Sigmarite Temple tower stairs.

On to the next adventure:

Oct. 29th 2017

(I think Jason B. took the notes here.)

Vincent shook Leopold and Sally awake. The sun was starting to rise and it seemed that the Skaven activity was much less. We inspected a corps of a dwarf and found a Dwarven hammer and a small pouch of silver which Leopold ended up claiming. The temple of Sigmar seemed quite enough so they decided to move indoors. Leopold had a strong opinion to find the dorms of the warrior priest to re-equip and treat the wounds they had. Sally led the way making sure to remain as quiet as possible. They made their way down to the dorms without drawing too much attention. The dorm was a good find. Armor and weapons were plentifully and the group did what they could to address their wounds. Lukas and Genaro were still lost but Vincent, Leopold and Sally were hoping they were still on the upper floor of the temple.

The party finished with their preparations, very well equipped but still hurting from heavy wounds. The Temple was still abandoned and the party progressed towards where they hoped to find the Lukas and Genaro. A loud crack of a gun shot rang out as Vincent passed an opening in the wall. They kept their heads down and proceeded to the top floor.

The scene was horrid. Bodies of Skaven and Talabhimers lay everywhere. Even more worrisome was the streaks of blood showing that some bodies have been removed, dragged away for some unknown purpose. A subtle grown came from a blood stained heap on the ground. It was Lukas barely conscious but alive. Genaro on the other hand was not there. Perhaps he made it out on his own. A hopeful thought, but the more likely explanation is much worse.

It was clear that at least Gods Row was taken from the enemy. Vincent suggested we get a better view of the situation from the top of the temple bell tower. The city seemed quiet, until from out of the Law district a strange beam projected into the sky and illuminated the clouds! The strange colors projected on the clouds start to move and created shapes. An image begins to appear. The image in the clouds revealed a large horned rat which begins to speak.

The rat’s screeched, the speech was simple and to the point, “Listen and you shall live, resist and shall die.”

With a crash, the obsidian obelisk shattered and fell to the ground. The Skaven were in possession of the countess and the city was theirs. It was time to escape Talabheim. Another shot rang out as a Skavens bullet nearly struck Vincent’s head. At this point, the party decided to make haste to the North East towards the Taalgarten and then over the walls.

The path was clear, the sounds of patrolling Skaven faded as the party made it over the wall and into the plains of crater. It was very cold, and the going was hard as a fog turned the group around. It was starting to look desperate until the hoofs of a Pistoliers mount clattered up one of the roads. Fortunately, the hail of the rider was friendly and the message was ever welcome: “Rally at Dankerood!” With directions from the rider, the party continued on their way and reached the town. The town was surrounded by a sea of tents, more refugees from Talabhiem. Once a Nobles retreat town, Dunkerood was now a refuge of all those displaced from Talabheim; unfortunately most inhabitants have been wounded.

The party was met by a Corporal and they informed him that they had information in regards to Talabheim. The Corporal took them straight to the General in charge of military operations in absence of the countess. Vincent gave a full report to the General and the nobles that were also present. After Vincent’s report, the General ushered out the Nobles in order to talk in private to the group. The General enlisted the group into the Talabhiem army granting Vincent a commission as a Lieutenant, Leopold as a Sergeant and Sally and Lukas as Privates. The mission assigned was to create a resistance within the walls of Talabhiem, and send back regular reports of what was going on back to the General. With that, the General released them to the Corporal with then supplied them with necessities for the mission then left them to plan.

Nov. 19th 2017

(Jason B.)

It was a cold morning. The Cpl. woke the group up before sun rise. The General was on his way so everyone got their gear together to leave for Talabhiem. The general approached and gave his final orders and sent everyone on their way. They were lead by cautious group of riders that seemed to have seen some battle. The cart was loaded and Leopold to the reins with everyone else in the back. While on their way back to the invaded city of Talabhiem, Vincent went over the plan. Everyone seemed to be in agreement and concluded that operations should begin in the Guildrow. The trip took most of the day. The sun was getting close to the creator horizon, it will be dark soon. The escorts when on their way and group with cart found a small area of houses near the gates of the city. The cart was hidden in an abandon barn with a portion of the supplies. It was getting dark now so the group quickly moved into the city to find some shelter for the night.
The Guildrow was spread out with several trees and tall hedges lining the streets. It gave the impression of a village more than a conventional city quarter. Shelter would need to be found quickly. The Skaven and their lives underground make them very keen to night fighting. Lukas was able to locate an abandoned forge with attached home. The group moved in quietly and reinforced the windows to prevent any light from escaping. Everyone got some decent sleep that night.
In the following week the group was able to recruit a number of resistance fighters and informants.

Recruits:
Geerul Gladish’ – Former spice merchant, now slave. Wants vengeance, Scouting the Guild row with Silca Arrent.

Silca Arrent’ - Knight of the Verdient fields. She feels guilty for the fall of the city. Scouting Guild Row mapping patrols.

Honnor Skipenbur’ – Scholar and Engineer, working on a contraption, slave foreman. Checking the construction sites and looking for Genaro.

Bjorn- is a criminal with a long list of crimes, multiple homicide, likes sharp knives, sneaky, looks exactly like Van Disel, retrieving weapons in Guild Row.

Karstashai- female, they baked her father, was a slave and a skilled cook, informant, Scouting the Merchant District. Has Vincent’s elven Amulet

Pabol Roubandend- Halfling, stealthy, Scouting the Manor District for intel on the countess troop numbers.

Otto Von Friedherst:
An old man dressed in rags mumbling to himself, most will keep their distance as Otto seems to have been touched by a bit of insanity. Though this isn’t quite the case. Otto was, well, still is an educated man. He was a relatively respected surgeon who practiced in the manor district in Talabheim. After an unfortunate death of a patient, which happened to be the daughter of vocal politician, doom Ottos career and respect. It was not long until the poor old man was cast out and for his own sake he took to hiding among the less prestigious neighborhoods of Talabhiem to avoid ridicule and harassment.

Otto dresses like a bagger to hide his identity though at this point in time that is less important. Rather out of place is when Otto needs to take a close look at something a rather ornate pair of eye glasses is drawn from beneath the rags, he only sign of his once prestigious career.

Otto in his age has come down with the shakes. This can be a problem if asked to perform medical aid to others though a couple swigs of a frosty beverage or hard alcohol steadies the hands. Though this can be dangerous to balance.

Yavandir:

An elven blacksmith from the Laurelorn forest, Yavandir lives in the Eye of the Forest for almost 50 years now. Unlike many of his fellows, he's not arrogant. All the same, that trait had been replaced by your typical, blacksmith's bluntness and dryness of character.

Yavandir is an excellent blacksmith and weapons maker. Before the invasion many nobles commisioned blades from his forge, for they had no equals in Talabheim. Yavandir especially liked to work on a mysterious metal, gathered from meteorites that struck the great crater from time to time.

His forge had been lost to skaven forces, assaulting the Schwartzhold-Nordgate district. Yavandir fell into a state of melancholy after that, from which it can be hard to snap him out of.

Franka "Newt" Wilmer
Race: Human
Age: 14
Sex: Female
Eyes: Green
Hair: Red
Height: 4'11"
Weight: 90 lbs
Birthplace: The Tallows, Talabheim, Talabecland
Profession: Ratcatcher's Apprentice, Street Urchin
Skills: Survival, Fleeing, Knowledge of sewers and The Tallows
Disadvantages: Too young to fight, antisocial
Franka was born to Nihil Wilmer, a poor, alcoholic ratcatcher in The Tallows. Her mother died during childbirth. She grew up fending for herself, as her father would often leave for weeks on end on drunken benders. While he was often too drunk to properly train her in the delicate art of rat-catching, she was given an excellent education on the city's sewer systems and back alley labrynths of The Tallows. At the tender age of ten, her father never returned from one of his trips and she retreated from society into the city's sewers, carving out a meager existence for herself scavenging for food and any discarded usable items.
She has been well aware of the city's skaven problem years before the siege, and excels in hiding, playing dead, and escaping through narrow spaces even the ratmen overlords seem unaware of. Since the siege, she has become something of a legend for her ability to survive and evade skaven patrols.
She is presumed mute, but has simply become traumatized and anti-social due to her living conditions over the last few years. She is untrusting of anyone else and perhaps this is the biggest reason for her ability to survive in this environment.
Fondly referred to as "Newt" by the resistance movement in Talabehim for her ability to slip away from danger, she has yet to speak to anyone or cooperate with them on their plans - They must undo years of neglect society has given her and win her trust, but they have to catch her for long enough to have a civilized conversation first.

Heintz Aufwieg
Heintz is 29, 5'11 and 200lbs of muscle. He has brown hair and blue eyes. Originally from a small village in Middenland, he left his home province to turn over a new leaf and get away from the gang he was in. Upon reaching Talabheim he devoted himself to Myrmidia and became a night watchman. He is suspicious of people wearing veils and fears the forest because it was foretold that he would find his doom under an oak tree.

Name-

Stone House and Maridian Temple are still held by Talabhiemers. There were reports of some cannon fire and some smoke outside of the crater. Some say it’s the Empire armies others say the armies aren’t there. Much discussion about using explosions on the gate was had. Leopold offered to climb the wall to scout
and find a path to the gate.

Talhagrun Forest they are gathering wood. We should follow up on that. Perhaps
General Haulfner men can raid that area at the moment.

Konrad Fleischer
Konrad was the butcher in his neighborhood, prior to the Skaven’s takeover of the city. Now, he’s still a butcher, but not of anything a human would want to eat…unless they have to. The Skaven have let him live because he butchers what they bring to him. That, and such cowardly mutants are wary of attempting to subdue a man with so many large knives. Sure, they’d overwhelm him with numbers, but why risk being the one he takes to with him? For the citizens, he still butchers whatever vermin they bring and he does so for free. During these times, you would be amazed out how far a squirrel can be stretched.
Konrad has not family, which is just as well given the current events. He preferred the bachelor life and not many women are interested in a man that smelled like death, anyway. Konrad is about 5’7” and very wirey. He’s in his early 40s and shows his age. Konrad is a very anxious individual, especially when he’s nervous. However, he’s also an excellent estimator. Show him any group and he can estimate how many of it, it’s dimensions, and/or it’s weight with unbelievable accuracy.

So there you have the next few episodes, I'll try to dole them out until we get caught up.
