Paint Table Saturday 148 - Orc Boar Boyz (commission)

Hi All,

What with all the various things going on I haven't been painting as much as I like. I did finish this unit of 10 Orc Boar Boyz, after the person who sent them to me asked for the back post haste.

I'm fairly happy with how they turned out, but I confirmed without a doubt that I am not cut out to be a commission painter. I held on to these bad boys way too long, almost a year, and my normal angst about color schemes and techniques was magnified for this project. So you all are looking at my first and last commission project.

So I'm trying to get myself together, I know it's a constant battle, and I've been prepping a whole bunch of figures for the Herohammer facebook group and a side thing that I would like to bring to Oldhammer.

Speaking of Oldhammer, it's less than a month away!? I've put out a call for a second order of Oldhammer T-shirts. This run may be slightly more expensive than the last, but no more than $13 per shirt. Of course if you need it mailed to you shipping is a little extra.

Have a great Labor Day weekend.

    1. If you want to know what the cost would be just message me your size and address if you need it mailed to you and I can send you a quote.

  3. I love that tshirt, but UK shipping probably puts it beyond an impulse buy! I hope the OITNW event goes well - we demand photos!

    1. Oh, and the boar boys are fabulous. I shall be coming back to this lot when my handful struggle their way to the top of the painting queue.

    2. Thanks Rab, I've sent one out to the UK and heard that one of our members had his kidnapped before he could wear it by someone visiting. I want to say shipping is around $13-14. Expensive but not horribly so.

    3. Thanks for checking, Sean, but I think I'll pass. I expect to see OITNW photos with lots of gamers wearing it, though!

  6. The unit looks great. Well done.

I too did commission painting. I managed it for about a year before giving up. It's a lot of hard work for not so great money. Unless you're one of the big guys, getting paid reasonably well for your efforts is hard to come by. You have to start small, build up the base, and sell yourself cheap to do it.

I also didn't care for not being able to work on my own stuff. I believe a hobby should be just that. It's a break from life, a chance to get creative and enjoy yourself. When that becomes work, like commission painting, the fun can disappear. At least it did with me.

    1. Thanks Thor, the sad part is I came to the same conclusion before I agreed to do this commission. I'm just too slow and agonize too much over simple choices to make it rewarding for me personally. It also cuts into my own painting queue which is still 20 years behind.

  7. Yeah, Commission painting is soul sucking stuff as far as I'm concerned. won't do it again.

Orcs look amazing! Cohesive and classic. Whoever's getting them are a lucky sod.
