More WFB orcs (now with Trolls)

So here is that other unit from 1991 or there abouts.

A feisty looking bunch.
So here was the other unit. What I liked about them was that they were all individuals, I don't think there are any repeats.

With these guys in the front rank we can see that I was doing a wash after the base coat and then drybrushing in highlights and touching up areas. All of the the flat shields were painted and I think I was mostly channeling the Bone March from Greyhawk when I made these shield designs.

I really should have dusted these guys off, the are pretty dirty.

I liked how this shield design turned out.

Actually looks like an Orc painted it.

I'll also note here that this must be the most fastidious Orc ever. Note sure how he kept his pale loincloth and boot trim so clean.

I think the highlight in the eye is purely from the flash.

Have to have at least one white hand in an Orc group.

I think you need a nine iron here.

Best face of the bunch.

I liked the touch of color and thought his putees looked good.

I don't remember cutting the bow out of his hand, but maybe I did. I think i reasoned that the shield would cover the quiver, of course it fell off.

Ultimate 80's side pony tail.

 Bonus Troll #1

I liked the fish poking out of the net.

So there you have the only models I ever finished for Warhammer. I'll post the partials and unopened stuff in future posts.

Welcome to Laffe, also known as Leif Eriksson. He doesn't appear to have a blog but he does have a youtube channel here. I should probably add my youtube channel to my links, as well as actually make some more videos.

Got some work done on the Talomir stuff, I'm still plugging away. That's all for now.

    1. Thanks Dean. I remember trying really hard with this bunch, I think it may be why I never finished anything else. I couldn't commit to so much detail on unit after unit.

  3. Thank you for the welcome. My blog is at http://figurfanatikern.blogspot.se/

I'm surprised you managed to find my Youtube channel but not the blog :-)

And I love these old Orcs. I have a few which I bought on eBay over the years since I never bought them when they were available.

    1. Hi Leif, your youtube channel is listed in your friend connect profile under links. Thanks for the link to your blog, I am now a follower.

I see you too are a fan of X-Wing. Great game.

And I have been sitting on these figures since 1991.

  4. You know, if you re-did the bases then you'd have a decent little unit here. Then add a leader of some type (perhaps a dark wizard), some heroic types to oppose them, a little bit of dungeon terrain and - I'm getting a bit carried away, aren't I?

    1. Hi Hugh, sounds good. I probably will at the very least reflock their bases, although doing them up with warbases stuff is very tempting. This trip down memory lane has rekindled my interest in painting up my existing 28mm stockpile.

  5. A real treat seeing these great Orcs! Thanks for sharing! And I have the same dust problem too. Even with figs that have been stored away in figure cases for years - how does the dust get in there? I've tried a couple ways to get rid of the dust but the most effective method so far seems to be using a record cleaner brush to wipe them off - but it is very time-consuming. Do you have any tricks that work well?

    1. Thanks private w. Yes these have been in the case for years and they look like they've been on a shelf in a shed somewhere. Record cleaning brush is a good idea. I also thought maybe a cheap makeup brush or camera brush would work too. I usually use dust off (air in a can) to do it as well, I just didn't before I took all these pictures because they had been packed away.

    1. Thanks Michael. I really like the Troll sculpts, I wish I had painted them better, they seem to be in between the two units in technique.

  9. Some familiar faces in there - tidy work on those shields too.

I think my favourite has to be the face with the nose spike!

    1. Thanks Thansants. That one made me cringe a little. I believe I was channeling the artwork on the shields displayed on the Man Mangler box art for that one.

  10. Great trip back in the days! We all have got some dusty damaged minis on our drawers, let's make them breathe and let's take photos of them! I love those old paintjobs, of course not because of their technique but because most of the time, we were putting all we had in them and they are what made us dream in the first place. A good rebasing of the group would be ace !
But then... take good pictures of the newly based unit and get them a good dettol bath, there's nothing like giving a second life (or third or fourth...) to minis of old now you have the opportunity (and skill) to paint the way you wanted at the time...

    1. Thanks Asslessman. The thought of stripping these figures terrifies me as I'm not altogether certain that I could do better. They definitely need some love, but I'm not sure what to do with them yet.

    2. Yeah we all know that, first time is terrifying but then you get to love that sensation and you cannot stop thinking about stripping everything...
And yes, I'm also talking about minis

  12. Nice lot, I'd field them as they are after a bit of dusting! Better to move onwards and upwards with stuff that hasn't been painted at all yet. Close up photos are very unforgiving, they don't really reflect whether a unit looks good on the table. Love the Bonus Troll #1 back shot, I never knew he carried a net with fish, making him the ancestor of all River Trolls!

    1. Hi Subedai, thanks. I actually feel like these are pretty much ready to go, although again the basing need a serious overhaul. And yeah that Troll always looked cool to me.
