Grape Ape and Green Stuff

Hi All,

I think I've passed the 24 hour window so I can share my four armed Ape with you.

He is a resin affair from Bombshell miniatures that no longer appears to be available. I took the opportunity to use my Mesh roller from Green Stuff World for his base. I thought the whole roller was one contiguous pattern, but it is multiple different mesh patterns.

As I said in the original post here, I always wanted him purple as an homage to Grape Ape, but had thought about him having whiter fur. I chose not to do that as that is a very common scheme and I wanted his flesh areas to contrast more.

I don't know what happened with the varnish exactly. This is the first problem I've had with Galeria. Perhaps I don't keep my varnish bottles mixed enough because a similar thing happened to my Liquitex matte varnish where it just seemed too shiny. I'll keep you posted on any developments.

Happy painting.

  1. Pick up some Vallejo matte varnish. It's so matte, I have to cut it with gloss when I airbrush it!

    1. Thanks Andrew. I had a small bottle of Vallejo that I used for awhile. At the end it seemed to frost or do something weird. I probably mostly just need to make sure that the varnish I'm using hasn't separated.

  2. I dunno mate - white would have given the beast a real nod to it's martian heritage :)

Regardless, this looks super cool and it seems well huge too. Big enough to eat Ambulls?

    1. Hi Dai, White would be cool too, sometimes I like to try to be different. Maybe we should have a cage match between him and the Ambull.

  4. Looks great. I tend to add a spot of water to my brush on varnishes just to thin them a little. I found when a little thick it goes on transparent but if it pools anywhere it goes a little bit frosty looking.

    1. Hi Simon, the glossiness this time was totally unexpected. I think I was just rushing things and didn't shake the bottle enough before applying.

  5. That's a very pretty ape (though I wouldn't tell him that to his face!). The varnish looks a bit glossy - is that the problem? If so then perhaps it could be rectified with another coat (properly mixed, of course)?

    1. Thanks Hugh, yes the glossiness was the problem. I brushed on twice and hit it with matte spray. It's still glossy in places but I had to move on.
