Paint Table Saturday 204 - Ok I know it's Monday

Hi All,

I had this Dragon Forge resin piece finished earlier in the week, but was trying to get the squad of IG off the table this week as well.


Once I used a larger brush to drybrush the grey on it looked better. Then I used  a sponge to stipple on some greens to look like lichen on stone. Finally I picked out the small skulls with reaper bone triad (09058-09060) and slopped my grunge wash all over it. I'm reasonably happy.

The IG are proving fairly fiddly.


I always hate getting to the final touch up stage. It feels like you are just going back over the same colors in a circle as you try to fix the places where you slopped paint on an adjacent part. I thought I would be able to add these to the skull thing for BeerMaW 13, but then I dotted their eyes.


His look ok in this view, but if you zoom in it is a definite cat eye look. Some are much worse. I used  XS Pitt pen and am finding it more difficult. In the past it felt like you could easily dot the iris, now it feels like you need to move the tip to get the ink to come off. this gives more of a line than a circle or dot. I probably shouldn't do eyes last, but I always do.

I also have been trying to figure out how to do their shoulder markings. These are pretty new hammer. Do I go more old school? Do I use decals or free hand? I haven't decided yet.

  1. Nice work. I've found that blacklining using Reaper Walnut brown is really handy for separating colors during the final stages. I say go with decals - nothing says old school better than decals IMO

    1. Thanks Anthony. The belts and pouches are Walnut Brown right now. Reaper also makes liners but I usually just let the wash do the heavy lifting for that. It's funny, to me decals are new school. They may solve a lot of problems though.

  7. Skull piece is pretty cool mate. The greens and greys make it look all sorts of slime-covered and old.

    For eyes I stopped using pens a while back and went back to brushing instead. Far easier for me at least. The pens had the same effect you've described.

    For markings I say decals too. If you have them. Otherwise, something simple and geometric, don't try to go overboard on freehand if you don't have to.

    1. Thanks Dai, solid advice. The pen was bought because I couldn't paint the eye dots to save my life. I think I may break out a new brush. The ones I'm using don't come to a point anymore.

  8. All looks very good. Decals work well on flat surfaces, or on panels which are only curved around one axis. If these shoulder pads are more complex curves than that [i.e. are "spherical" rather than "cylindrical"] then I think I'd use freehand.

    1. Thanks Hugh. I vaguely remember my 10 year old self using, and hating, decals on WW2 planes. So I think I see what you're saying. I need to figure out quick as time is slipping away to complete these guys this week.

  9. Wow, nice paint jobs! Seeing some IG really takes me back to way back when....

    I'd say where you went wrong with the eyes was trying to do them in the first place, but that's because I've never been able to eyes at all. 😀

    1. Thanks Stew. To do the eyes or not do the eyes. Always a question. I always hate coming close to finishing models. So much room for error. I'm still waffling on the markings.
