My only finished WFB figures

I briefly played Warhammer 3rd edition back in 1990-1992 or there abouts. I was still working in film post production in NYC and had disposable income. I bought tons of lead and tried to get my friends interested in painting some stuff up too.

This led to me trying to buy figures for several forces and my friends giving up because they didn't have the time or interest for painting figures.

So here are two units of Orcs and a couple of Trolls that, from the looks of them, I considered finished at the time. I base this primarily on the fact that I flocked the bases.

I just quickly set up and took these pictures with flash only, so they are not the best. I need to take more time and think about my setup. I'm just getting tired of not showing things because I never have it set up just so.

I believe this unit was supposed to be Big Uns. As you can see they are pretty heavily armored and have a uniform of sorts. I did not pin the standard bearers hand, so of course it broke off. I also tore off the free hand banner I made because I hated it. I did that many years ago.

The Leader. Looks like I didn't give him an ink wash and missed a spot on his tongue.  I remember being unable to get in there and paint his left eye (the right of the picture).

The Champion. He seems to have no shading as well. You can see a little bit of the aquarium sand I tried to use as a basing material before I switched to flock.

I really liked the severed heads on the belt detail. Again the painting is not much to write home about.

The standard bearer. I liked his gold nose ring. I did not like the banner I made for him, or the fact that his hand broke off. It was before I thought to pin things.

The musician. It looks like I messed up the focus. Is that bare lead in the crook of his elbow? I've never seen him this close up before.

One of the trooper poses and his cast shield.

Another trooper pose. I think I did him in another batch as the armor looks a little different.

Another angle to show his shield.

Third trooper pose. I found this one a little boring. I should have dusted him off.

Another angle of him and his dusty hat.

So I'll leave you with these as the first installment in reliving my Warhammer experience. Looking back on it now I see I was a serviceable block painter but not much more. I recall putting ink washes on and dry brushing highlights, but it is not evident on this unit. Maybe I painted them before learning those techniques or maybe I just rushed these guys to get them on the table.

I hope you enjoyed this blast from the past, I'll have more in a further installment. I have so much other stuff to paint that I'll probably resist the urge to fiddle with them.

  1. That's the beginnings of a nice little army there, you might as well get a Man-Mangler and a few Goblin Wolf Riders to go with them...

    1. I still have a couple more cases with various stages of unfinished wolf riders and gobbos, as well as orc archers. I also have two skull crushers, one man mangler and three Chukkas still in the boxes. I'll reveal them in due time.

  2. Thanks Andrew. Unfortunately I'm not sure I've progressed. I basically stopped painting, modelling and gaming completely as "Real Life"™. But I'm a stubborn git and willing to bodge out a few figures.

  3. Very nice "blast from the past" - the close up camera shots are way more detailed (unforgiving) than naturally viewed, so I wouldn't even worry about things like the one eye being missed or the area on the tongue. These guys would look great on any tabletop. Best, Dean

P.S. Looking forward to seeing more of your trove.

    1. Thanks Dean. Following the Oldhammer blogs is getting me excited about unearthing the hoard.

    1. Thanks Michael. I've been meaning to post a picture of this unit for over a year. Thanks for the kind words. I thought I was a pretty good painter at the time considering it was all learned from White Dwarf and GW Painting guides. Looking at where the base level of painting is now though, I've got a lot of catching up to do.

  5. I remember watching with envious eyes as my old mate pushed his Marauder Orc regiment around the table.

I think I ended up with his command group when he packed it in but don't know where the trooper went to?

My standard bearer's arm has snapped at the elbow as well as the wrist...

    1. Hi Thansants, sorry I missed your comment. Packing these guys away so you don't snap off arms or banners is always tricky. I feel like I'm risking damage every time I put them back in the case.

  6. I think these are the Regiment of Renown "Ruglud's Armoured Orcs". (It is A regiment of renown at least.) This was before GW thought of "Big 'uns" so they are regular orcs, just a bit more well armoured.

Beautiful figures, from the glory days of GW, in my opinion.

    1. Hi Leif, thanks for commenting. It's not totally clear to me now but I bought these in blister packs I think. Very well could be a regiment of renown. I need to dig for my Warhammer Armies book and see if I don't have my army list squirreled away somewhere.

      This bunch were my favorite.

    2. I did some googling and I was wrong. These are not Ruglud's Armoured Orcs, which can be seen here:
      http://www.solegends.com/citrr/rrd05rugluds.htm

They are from Marauder Miniatures, part of a set and in blister form:

      Still awesome!

  7. Good core for a horde, and the paint job works fine on the battlefield, it's neat with strong base colours. I relaunched my 3rd Edition Orcs & Goblins with models I painted 20 odd years ago as well and I didn't want to have to paint them all from scratch. Adding shades and highlights over the base colours brought me decent results.

    1. Hi Subedai, thanks for commenting. I had similar thoughts, I'm just afraid to ruin them so I've been holding off. I will probably shade and highlight them in the future.
