Basing and Base coating

We've managed to keep up the pace here. On Friday I finished basing the last five Mantic Skeletons and the
14 1/72 figures I had mounted on washers.

My son base coated five skeletons, three Orcs and seven Dwarves. I think he'll need to go back and touch them up to ensure coverage, but it was a very productive day.

I even videoed myself doing my basing process, but I'm not happy with the footage. I can't find the charger for my old camcorder and my Nikon can take video but I had a really hard time figure out how to get it to focus. So I have several minutes of blurry footage that is mostly the back of my hand as I talk at you. But it is in full 1080 HD. I think I'll spare you guys until I can do it right.

While I was digging around in the 28mm box I found this guy.

Anybody recognize him? I want to say he came with an issue of White Dwarf. I really don't remember where he came from. As you can see he is plastic and I believe the 1991 base came with him.

Welcome to new follower Stephen Green. I almost missed you following because you don't have an avatar. For some reason blogger puts you all the way at the end of the followers list, but still in chronological order with the others who have no avatar. Steve is from Stevo's mini Soldiers and he is the foil of Tom from Tom's Toy Soldiers. Check them both out if you like to see two guys appearing to have fun playing games, and painting some nice figures. Oh and Steve, you can also put a link to your blog in your friend connect profile. I think it comes up as "Links". That way it is easier for people to follow you back.

Lastly I wanted to bring a good blog to everyone's attention. It is Amateur Hour by Mattias Darrow. His art is too good and whimsical not to be seen by a wider audience. And with character names like the Keeper of Livers and the Flayer of Shins for his Song of Blades and Heroes campaign, how could you not follow.

That is all.

  1. Good Job with the basing, that figure is a Citadel Black Orc, came out around 94/95 if I remember right :)

    1. Thanks Zabadak. I'm pretty good about basing, it's finishing a model I have problems with.

  5. Are you brushing on your base coats? I know that there are mixed opinions on this, but I find spraying to be much quicker and easier (also it's more likely to get complete coverage, if done in stages and at different angles).

    1. Hi Hugh, yeah we brush on here. I don't know if it was just growing up in New York City and spray paint was hard to get or what, but I've never been able to get comfortable with the spray can. I tried it with the IMEX and Zvezda 1/72 vikings and knocked them over with the force of the spray. I also got very worried that I was drowning the detail. The coverage was another issue. I haven't really made the decision to not spray so much as I feel I have the control I want with the brush and I don't have to worry about inhaling any paint or varnish. We had a good time working away.

    1. Hi Diego, thanks. For all of my "man sized" 1/72 (20mm) figures I base them on 3/4" fender washers. They are approximately 19mm in diameter. I bought many boxes of them online years ago. You could use a normal washer from the hardware store, but fender washers have a smaller hole so it's easier to cover up. Never to late to comment. If I see it I'll reply.
