Wizard Battle! - Oldhammer Comics

Hi All,

My boy wanted to play some Warhammer and I had an idea I've wanted to try out for awhile and needed to remind myself how 3rd Edition Magic worked. So we decided to take two wizards each. The idea was a wizard and his apprentice. So one 15th Level (to get some 2nd level spells) and one 5th level.

We rolled for magic points and spells as per the tables in Warhammer Armies.

Here's the report. ( I went with a rotoscope filter as the pictures weren't all that great.)

As you can see we also had to make due with the figures we had to hand. A chaos warrior subbed for the Undead Champion. Primed Zombies the place of Skeletons and a Giant Rat in the place of the Demonic Steed. I know I made the Ghost of HG Wells cry, but I've put off my son too many times in the past and I don't want to kill his enthusiasm for the game.

In the end it's all about fun.

Oldhammer Weekend USA 2016 - Sheep of Camembert

My fourth and final game of the weekend. I had to get to the airport around the time Huzzah opened so I was unable to join everyone for the last days games. Brian had finished his Bretonnian army for the event but then, as usual, GM'd a good portion of the day. Since I alwasy make it a point to get in at least one game with my Oldhammer fantasy army I couldn't leave Brian with his force un-blooded.

So we borrowed a conference room at the hotel we were staying at and got in a quick game before I headed off to the airport and he went back to Huzzah Hobbies.

These were again 1500 point armies. We just placed terrain in an appealing manner and decided to use his Pink sheep from the battle at the farm scenario. The idea is we were each trying to obtain these sheep that tasted like cheese. A battle ensued.

My inability to harm his general, and the subsequent killing of mine was just the tip of the iceberg. I threw a lot at those damn peasants and they just would not quit. My fanatics were also nullified by the gobbos running away and the Illusory hero causing the others to deploy early.

A fun game, but a crushing defeat. Thus ended the festivities for me. In writing these games up i realized that I have some pictures of the Man O'War game Brian and I played in July. I'll try to get those going soon.

I'd also like to welcome Nathan Heazlett to the blog. Nathan was one of the players in the Nu Ork scenario and he graciously let me use some of his photos to help tell the story. I don't see a blog in his profile. Let me know and I'll link to it.

Oldhammer Weekend USA 2016 - The Road to Marienburg

Hi All,

  The next battle from Saturday Oct 1st was my Orcs vs. Thomas D's beautiful Empire army. I call out a theme idea that I had about some magical halfling muffins, but don't really explain it well.

  These were 1500 point armies. I modified my list slightly to include some different models and try something a little different this time around. Some call that meta gaming. ;)

  The comic is once again made using Comic Life 3, the Fantasy template. The colors are a little garish, feel free to critique the choices. I'm trying to tie all the comics together with the "Oldhammer Comics" brand and I'm using a couple of the Graphic Novel page layouts to get that House of Hengist style.

The pictures I took for this battle are not the greatest, but I can't go back and retake them. I also was trying to not slow down the game even more than my fumbling through the rules made it. 3rd edition is fun, but it can take a long time and be quite draining.

I may start showing some painting next, mostly paint repairs. Next Battle Report will be Escape from Nu Ork, but I need to do some yard work and get the Halloween decorations up.

Paint Table Saturday 148 - Orc Boar Boyz (commission)

Hi All,

What with all the various things going on I haven't been painting as much as I like. I did finish this unit of 10 Orc Boar Boyz, after the person who sent them to me asked for the back post haste.

I'm fairly happy with how they turned out, but I confirmed without a doubt that I am not cut out to be a commission painter. I held on to these bad boys way too long, almost a year, and my normal angst about color schemes and techniques was magnified for this project. So you all are looking at my first and last commission project.

So I'm trying to get myself together, I know it's a constant battle, and I've been prepping a whole bunch of figures for the Herohammer facebook group and a side thing that I would like to bring to Oldhammer.

Speaking of Oldhammer, it's less than a month away!? I've put out a call for a second order of Oldhammer T-shirts. This run may be slightly more expensive than the last, but no more than $13 per shirt. Of course if you need it mailed to you shipping is a little extra.

Paint Table Saturday - 135 Orcs, Cthulhu and Chaos

Busy with the last regular meet of track season, but I did get some figures washed and a little bit done on the orcs.

A little bit of work on these but still way too late. I need to push harder on these because I've signed on for a couple more competitions (maybe too strong a word) on Facebook.

For the Bazaar of Crooked Wonders group's "Big Things" comp. I'm doing a Reaper Cthulhu. He's a big bastard.

Foe Herohammer International I'm doing a Tzeentch themed Chaos Army. Here's a unit of 4 Chaos Warriors plus Champion. I finally got the majority of the paint off the Marauder figure on the right using Krud Kutter Graffiti remover. It was fairly cheap at home depot ~$7 and took off the paint in 5 - 10 minutes. I can't decide if I'm going to change out the shield or flatten his shield boss. My original intent was to try to recreate the original scheme my brother tried but couldn't execute.

Anyway, I need to have all this completed this month. Hmm.

Lastly, I processed these in Adobe Lightroom and added a graphic watermark. Just trying some things out. Any thoughts?

Paint Table Saturday - 134: Orcs and Abdul

Hi All,

Finally had a moment to take and edit a couple of pictures of what I'm working on. And on a Saturday no less!?

Five of the Boar Boyz that Don sent me. The other five have had some paint applied but I'm trying to figure out the sweet spot for keeping the ball rolling on them. I've seemed to have a hard time getting myself to sit at the paint table lately.

You'll see that my entry into the Abdul Goldberg contest on the Emporium of Rogue Dreams is coming along. I have until the end of the month to finish him. I'm fired up because they have just revealed that Rick Priestly will be the judge. I'm as giddy as a schoolgirl.

My Abdul is mostly Eureka's Voltaire with a few bits from the Cadian box added and a back pack and respirator cable/tube from Dragon Forge. Be sure to check out the other entries in the Album.

Hopefully I can get more done on this guy today.

PTS 104 - The finale of Orctober 2015, Talomir Tales and Orktober?

Hi All,

Not super productive but finished of these 20mm(1/72) Orcs. Mostly from Caeser, but one from Dark Alliance.

The usual process for me. I'm going to start trying harder to blend my layers on 28mm figures, I don't think I'm ready to do it on 20mm. The hand motif on the banner was a real pain. The sculpted folds, as you may already know, make it hard to paint a defined shape.

I also wanted to draw your attention to a battle report I did for Talomir Tales here. My terrain and the photos are pretty crap but the battle went pretty well. My son helped me roll dice and push soldiers around, it was quite enjoyable. He still hasn't totally caught the bug, but he asked me when the next game was.

I'm running out of time for Orktober, barring a cheeky rephotographing of that fantasy Black Orc on a star field background. I've revised down and will try to bang out the Gretchin Army Standard bearer whose tab says Runty but I have seen called Makari.

Paint Table Saturday 101 - Still Zombies and Little Orcs

Hi All,

Not super productive this last week.

Asecond layer of grey on the zombie flesh and then I got out all the various 20mm greenskins in various levels of completeness.

Hoping to get at least one Zombie and or Orc done tomorrow; but I have a kid party, track practice and a lot of tidying to do to set up for my Talomir game.

Orctober - First Orc - Plastic Black Orc

Here's my first entry for Orctober 2015:

You may all remember this figure, I want to say my brother gave it to me, but I'm not sure why he had it. It came out okay but the way I color blocked it originally may have obscured the detail. That baby skull on his belt was particularly problematic. After looking at some pictures of real horns I'm glad I tried grey colors for the horns this go round.

This is what he looked like before I started him this go round:

Scary! Again reminds me why I hate white undercoat.

Hopefully I'll have more soon. I want to finish those half done 20mm (1/72) Orcs now.

More Half Price Books and Ebay Loot

  I wish I had some finished figures to show you, but I've been fooling around with a bunch of other things. I did do a couple colors here and there, but nothing worth it's own post.

  What you may find interesting are these books I found in a central Phoenix Half Price books, after a wild goose chase for lunch and shopping (it was our anniversary).

  This first book is printed by Image comics and has four stories that are in Frank Frazetta settings. My wife gave me crap for the ample buttocks on the cover. Buttocks notwithstanding, I almost bought a copy for Airbornegrove, but I figured he probably already had it.

I then found this tome on the shelves. It seemed serendipitous, as I had just found the Inquisimunda resources here. The intro and fluff are great, and there is really fantastic art and painted scenery and figures.

But, it's a totally different system from Warhammer and the figures are 54mm scale. So even at $12.99 it may not be worth it. I believe the whole game has been discontinued by GW. We'll see if i can get some use out of it.

The Gruntas I won off ebay arrived, and I was surprised to see an extra figure in the blister on the left. It had at some point been cut open and then taped together with masking tape. The state of the tape led me to believe that happened a very long time ago. So not sure if I have a bonus figure or am missing a boar. I think it's the former. The figures are a spearman and a crossbowman. Or rather Orcs.

And at the same time the last of the Marauder Giant Black Orcs arrived. So I now have all four.

Don't know how much I'll be posting. We have the next three days off from school so we're going to take the kids up North to Flagstaff and sight see. So I may have some Grand Canyon etc pictures to share.
