Operation: Side Hustle (An Ambull Adventure)

Hi All,

This was actually my last game of 2018, but I've had a lot of fiddly things to do lately so it took me awhile to write it up. Once again I met up with Lasgunpacker and Dai. This time Dai brought an extra gang and his son along.

We played another Ambull hunt scenario using the new blind counters. I followed Airborne's suggestion and put the two higher value Ambulls in the middle of the table. For this game we used the Shadow War rules, which are essentially Necromunda, give or take.

I used my cellphone to take the pictures and then tweaked them only in Photoshop with the Poster edge filter and some minor exposure adjustments.

Enjoy.

Shadow War: Armageddon - The Return

Hi All,

This is the last battle report from my jaunt to California earlier this Summer. You can read Lasgunpacker's account here.

It was a nifty little scenario designed on the fly by Lasgunpacker. We used our Kill Teams from last year. My heavies were both out with head wounds. I was doing great up until the last two turns, then it all fell apart.

At my insistence, we did the recovery rules wrong. Sorry. It should be that you have to dice to see if you die, stay down or get up. Since we both did the same it came out in the wash.

Here's the report.

We had a great time at Great Escape Games. Tons of table space and loads of terrain to make a nice board. The only thing I'm not sure about is if Lasgunpacker captured all my guys who went down. In the last turn he murdered me. I was lucky in the after battle rolls though and suffered no ill effects.

Thanks for looking. If you have any rules clarifications let me know.

Ambull Extraction

Hi All,

So here we have the last game of 2017 played and the first post of 2018 written. This was another Ambull scenario, this time using the Shadow War: Armageddon rules.

Dai had brought two kill teams, I had my Ambulls and monsters. The table and all the scenery was provided by Great Escape Games in Sacramento. I had never been there before and enjoyed myself very much. Nicely stocked store, tons of room for play in the back.

I think I need to do an analysis on close combat, the Ambulls are proving very deadly, and on the probability of random monsters showing up. What with the Old World Army challenge taking up a lot of my time and energy I was also not quite as prepared as I should have been. Cheat sheets, handouts and some tables for various things would be good to have.

That being said , Dai and densmol were great sports and I think we all had fun. See what you think.

Special additions to the scenario were that Felipe and his "buckets" could be grabbed in lieu of the Male Ambull. I used the artillery scatter dice again for the movement of all monsters as well as Felipe and Chochtoxtoc. It may seem odd at times, but I think it adds an interesting element to the game. Aside from figuring out close combat and stats for all the other monsters, I need to figure out how to randomly generate monsters better. We agreed that rolling doubles wasn't frequent enough, we then switched to bullseye on the artillery deviation die, which was too much. Anyway, I think we need more civilians to get in the way and maybe random gangs to pop up and start something.

Hope you had a good holiday break and are ready to get back to the serious task of hobbying in 2018.

Thanks for looking.

Shadow War: Armageddon - 3 Way Loot Battle

Hi All,

Just trying to clear the long overdue battle report back log. This was a battle that Lasgunpacker, Dai and I fought way back in June. I think I was still reeling from KublaCon a little bit and did an absolutely horrible job of documenting this game. I did an even worse job on the next game Dai and I played after Lasgunpacker had to leave.

You can read about Lasgunpacker's report here and more in depth about Kill Team Sakhalin here, here, here, here and here. Worth a read as his team was quite interesting and he had a lot of cool character cards and whatnot.

Dai had some great, wacky, chaos figures but I couldn't find any write up about the team specifically. I didn't look super hard, just the blog archive around the time we played.

My guys were the Children of the Comet, the Genestealer "Gang" I made and used in that huge Necromunda game at Kublacon, here. It looks like I never took studio shots of or did a write up on this team or Abdul Goldberg and Associates.

Anyway here are the blurry cellphone shots put together in as coherent a way as I could manage.

So there you have it. I think SW:A is a great way to play a lite Necromunda style game and be a bridge between older and newer players. Could we have played Rogue Trader, or Necromunda? Sure, but I think this worked in giving us a framework for our teams and keeping all the rules fairly simple. Dai didn't get a chance to finish his terrain, but it was effective and looked the part. I'm looking forward to building my own Pegasus Models Sci Fi sets.

The only picture I took of our second Battle. We both played as IG, he had actual Catachans and I had Abdul and the Chukk playing as Catachans. Fogh'Orn Legh'Orn managed to tear a few guys apart and there were some flamer shenanigans on the other side of the tower that were fun. But I did something dumb and either didn't take the photos or deleted them right after taking them.

Thanks for looking. More painting madness on it's way tomorrow.

Countdown to Armageddon.

Hi All,

If you don't recall, here's the classic Public Enemy track:

Anyway we're getting down to the wire for getting ready for this game.

Here are some resources and some of the things I am using or trying to bring to the game.

Warhammer Community has a bunch of Downloads for Shadow War: Armageddon here. There are errata scenarios, force lists, roster sheets and status counters to print out if you don't have any.

I've tried to order these counters from Litko but they haven't shown up yet and when I track my order on their site it says "in production." So maybe not getting here in time.

I also tried to order a bunch of sci-fi building sets from Pegasus Hobbies and have them shipped to my folks house because I knew time was short. No dice. They won't ship to other than the billing address. Maybe they'll get here Thursday.

So I've got to finish painting up the stealers, touch up Abdul and the chickens, and try to get the McGuffins painted.

But back to resources for the game. There's a neat online roster builder here. I also found a referennce card someone made here. Lastly I'm going to use the name generators from here and here. The second one is especially good because it has Hiver names.

Still way too much to do. Wish me luck.

Painting Notebook - Genestealer Kill Team Leader

Hi All,

I haven't done one of these notebook posts in awhile and I wanted to remember how I painted this little guy.

He's my Genestealer Cult Kill Team Leader for Shadow War : Armageddon. The leader can have a power pick or power maul, so there you have it. I still need to paint the eyes, but he'smore or less done.

My sci-fi ash waste color combo, I think. Actually the mid color is probably darker and the mid I used here may be the lightest instead of the drizzle. That's the problem with not writing things down.

Metallics. As usual probably way too many for one model, but why use one when you can use seven? I forgot to include the Walnut Brown for his gun stock. I may also add a highlight to it.

Clothing. The color scheme is supposed to conjure up the fiery comet of salvation streaking across the sky. So Yellow, Orange and Red but muted ones.

Lastly we have flesh and chitin. I sort of followed GW's video tutorial here in that I put a purple ink wash over the shadow tone of the skin triad and then tried to layer on the highlights. Still a little rough in my layering. Nothing painting a few hundred more models won't fix. I'm not sure that the Reaper Blue Triad I picked really matches the genestealer blue recipe from GW. I might try mixing a little whit into the Ashen Blue to lighten it up. The Sky Blue was a spot color on the wires of the Power Pick. Perhaps last time I painted wires I used Sapphire Blue.

I'm also thinking about ordering some game tokens from Litko. Need to do it soon. I also need to check to see if I have all the templates and dice I need. I suspect I do.

Thanks for looking.
