Oldhammer Weekend USA 2016 - Sheep of Camembert

Hi All,

My fourth and final game of the weekend. I had to get to the airport around the time Huzzah opened so I was unable to join everyone for the last days games. Brian had finished his Bretonnian army for the event but then, as usual, GM'd a good portion of the day. Since I alwasy make it a point to get in at least one game with my Oldhammer fantasy army I couldn't leave Brian with his force un-blooded.

So we borrowed a conference room at the hotel we were staying at and got in a quick game before I headed off to the airport and he went back to Huzzah Hobbies.

These were again 1500 point armies. We just placed terrain in an appealing manner and decided to use his Pink sheep from the battle at the farm scenario. The idea is we were each trying to obtain these sheep that tasted like cheese. A battle ensued.

Right click to see them in Grail-Vision.

My inability to harm his general, and the subsequent killing of mine was just the tip of the iceberg. I threw a lot at those damn peasants and they just would not quit. My fanatics were also nullified by the gobbos running away and the Illusory hero causing the others to deploy early.

A fun game, but a crushing defeat. Thus ended the festivities for me. In writing these games up i realized that I have some pictures of the Man O'War game Brian and I played in July. I'll try to get those going soon.

I'd also like to welcome Nathan Heazlett to the blog. Nathan was one of the players in the Nu Ork scenario and he graciously let me use some of his photos to help tell the story. I don't see a blog in his profile. Let me know and I'll link to it.

Thanks for looking.

    1. Hi Hugh. What cheek! ;) I do like some well painted bretonnians myself. I need to pull mine together one of these days.

  2. One of my favorite Oldhammer stories. I was in a convention tournament against a fellow who had a beautifully painted Britonnian army (I had me dwarves). Behind his knights he had a horde of peasants, against whom he cast the spell, "curse of arrow attraction". So as I shot as his pretty knights with my crossbows, they cantered on while the peasants died in droves behind them. I was laughing so hard!

Thanks for the story, and rekindling that memory, Sean
    Cheers

    1. Hi Foss1066, great story. The indestructible peasants was one part of the story. The knights with general who had a Dragon Helm and a Flaming Sword and the 15th level mage was the other part. I was very frustrated by being mauled by his best unit and unable to kill his worst.

    1. Thanks AP. I came across that artistic rendering of your Elchingen (sp?) battle that I don't think I ever sent you. The one thing I think I would change about the comic is the white on light purple. A tad hard to read.

  4. That's a great looking game... the colours on the table are all so appealing! I love improvised pick-up games like this that happen at the end of a weekend. They are often the best games of all! Sorry to hear there was no sheep for you.

  5. I remember when White Dwarf published rules for that Chivalry card game (Or whatever it was called.) at around the time that Bretonnians became a "thing". Impulsive teenaged me REALLY wanted some of those cool knights and footmen minis that were being released at that time. (I think Wargames Foundry produces the sculpts now?)

Then I reminded myself that Chaos trumps all and left that silly idea behind. :)

Yet another smashing read mate. Your poor orcs never had a chance.

    1. Hi Dai. Flashy knights in all their Monty Python-ness are still appealing to me and I do believe that many of the original Bretonnians were just re-purposed Citadel historical sculpts. I believe you are correct that Foundry currently produces them. I try not to let the gamey aspect color my choice of army. I chose Orcs because I like the figures and the idea of having no other strategy than "run over there and hit something till it dies". He didn't intentionally set out to counter my "secret" weapons, but he definitely trumped all my special stuff. I need to figure out how to keep the orcs interesting by trying new things.
