Ambull Extraction

Hi All,

So here we have the last game of 2017 played and the first post of 2018 written. This was another Ambull scenario, this time using the Shadow War: Armageddon rules.

Dai had brought two kill teams, I had my Ambulls and monsters. The table and all the scenery was provided by Great Escape Games in Sacramento. I had never been there before and enjoyed myself very much. Nicely stocked store, tons of room for play in the back.

I think I need to do an analysis on close combat, the Ambulls are proving very deadly, and on the probability of random monsters showing up. What with the Old World Army challenge taking up a lot of my time and energy I was also not quite as prepared as I should have been. Cheat sheets, handouts and some tables for various things would be good to have.

That being said , Dai and densmol were great sports and I think we all had fun. See what you think.

Special additions to the scenario were that Felipe and his "buckets" could be grabbed in lieu of the Male Ambull. I used the artillery scatter dice again for the movement of all monsters as well as Felipe and Chochtoxtoc. It may seem odd at times, but I think it adds an interesting element to the game. Aside from figuring out close combat and stats for all the other monsters, I need to figure out how to randomly generate monsters better. We agreed that rolling doubles wasn't frequent enough, we then switched to bullseye on the artillery deviation die, which was too much. Anyway, I think we need more civilians to get in the way and maybe random gangs to pop up and start something.

Hope you had a good holiday break and are ready to get back to the serious task of hobbying in 2018.

Thanks for looking.

  1. What a great looking game and glad you all had a blast. Maybe rolling a 9+ on two dice is the way to go?

    1. Hi Riot, thanks. Yeah the 9+ is a good idea. I need to look at the probabilities and see what makes sense. I've also wanted to try blinds for finding Ambulls.

  2. There was some discussion of Ambull's on the Emporium of Rogue Dreamers the other day, so I went back and looked at their stats. My word are they trouble. They might as well be genestealers with more hitpoints and higher toughness. I really don't know how Felipe does his job. Lovely scenario and well palyed!

    1. Hi Composer, I have not compared the stats of Pure Strain Genestealers and Ambulls. The 5WS and 3 attacks is proving to be quite difficult to deal with.

    2. By the time of the Compilation, after when they were supposed to tear terminators apart in close combat, genestealers had become pretty spooky. The ambull is probably slightly behind that in close combat (frighteningly) but not far. Here's a statline for each for comparison: The original Rogue Trader genestealer, the Compilation genestealer, and the ambull. Even compared with the amplified genestealer the ambull still has a higher toughness and more wounds.

      Anyway . . . fun stuff!

    3. Thanks for the stats. Compilation Genestealers look absolutely terrifying. Much to ponder here.

    1. HI Airborne, yeah I think it went fairly well. I felt a little bad for densmol as he's really a Bolt Action player. That Ogre looked impressive, but barely held his own against the Ambull. The only wound it took was from the shotgun blast from the other Rogue Trader. That was a risk that paid off.

    1. Thank you Michal. I prefer the comic report to a wall of text and picture dump.

  5. Nice story telling mate! Man, those critters were popping up everywhere! O_o

Also, my poor mercs need more special weapon support... las guns are cool, but useless in the face of ambull might.

    1. Thanks Dai, yeah I need to work on the monster mechanic to get it better dialed in. I've heard a knock on Lasgun's before, great range but not much armor piercing power I think it was. I might also need to investigate using actual subdual weapons.

  6. Looks like a great game, and I am now more disappointed than ever that I could not make it.

Collecting ambull spunk seems like a much easier task when you have a guy wandering around with a bucket of it, than subduing and taking it from the source...

    1. Hi Lasgunpacker, sorry to have missed you. I'll be back in June. I wanted to add Felipe to see how it would effect the game. It was still hard as they fought each other tooth and nail to get him. And then Ambulls ran around and ripped people apart.
