PTS 104 - The finale of Orctober 2015, Talomir Tales and Orktober?

Hi All,

Not super productive but finished of these 20mm(1/72) Orcs. Mostly from Caeser, but one from Dark Alliance.

The usual process for me. I'm going to start trying harder to blend my layers on 28mm figures, I don't think I'm ready to do it on 20mm. The hand motif on the banner was a real pain. The sculpted folds, as you may already know, make it hard to paint a defined shape.

I also wanted to draw your attention to a battle report I did for Talomir Tales here. My terrain and the photos are pretty crap but the battle went pretty well. My son helped me roll dice and push soldiers around, it was quite enjoyable. He still hasn't totally caught the bug, but he asked me when the next game was.

I'm running out of time for Orktober, barring a cheeky rephotographing of that fantasy Black Orc on a star field background. I've revised down and will try to bang out the Gretchin Army Standard bearer whose tab says Runty but I have seen called Makari.

Lastly I'd like to welcome 4Graffiti to the blog. They appear to have several sites about products for Graffiti artists. If you are looking for such things you can look up their profile in the followers section. If there is a wargame hobby blog link I missed from 4Graffiti, please let me know.

Happy Halloween everyone.

Do you ever consider going pro?

Hi All,

Just felt like having more of a chat today. I came across this article on Bell of Lost Souls.

http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2015/05/hobby-the-cons-of-pro-painting.html

I forget what I was initially looking for but I gave it a read and found it quite interesting. I know that some of you do take commissions to subsidize your hobby, and some are full on professionals. So I just wanted to have a conversation about "Is painting for money/figures/goods and services really for you?"

I suspect that it's not really for me at this point. I have my focus issues/ times when I'd rather gouge my eyes out than paint. Plus I feel like I struggle to get my own projects going and don't do the best job at being a parent/spouse without the extra work.

Feel free to share your thoughts on why or why not being a "pro", or however you want to term it, is for you.

I'll try to have a little more content wise for you tomorrow.

Paint Table Saturday 103 - No Models Were Painted

Hi All,

Precious little going on besides acquiring Rogue Trader, Slave to Darkness and a few Chaos Knights.

I did get out all my 40K/ Sci Fi figures and try to figure out how I want to base them.

So and odd assortment of GW, Colony 87, Foundry and Mark Elster's Galactic Bastard. I'm just trying to see how the various slotta and non slotta compare. Generally speaking the non slotta integral base matches the ground level of the 3mm high plastic base when put on a roughly 1mm thick washer.

Thanks for looking, I've still got that battle report to do and have to get my mind around prep for the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge, which I think will be announced early next month.

Cheers.

Some one else actually likes my work!?

Hi All,

It's official. Those Bugbears I painted up are now live on the CP Models website here. You'll have to scroll down a little to see them, they're the second item. FBB2.

Here is my original picture:

I'm noticing some flaws in the photography right now, but overall, ok.

So if you like 20mm fantasy these are fun little figures to paint. They are about the same height as other 20mm(1/72) figures, so don't expect them to tower over other figures in this scale like the size comparison art from Dungeons and Dragons.

Note: These were formerly Splintered Light, but the range was sold to CP.

Crooked Claw on Indiegogo

Hey All,

I just wanted to let you all know about the Indiegogo crowdfund campaign going on right now.

http://igg.me/p/crooked-claw-goblins/x/3240788

I've been looking at the figures for quite some time. It seemed like a good time to get in.

That is all.

PS - fund this and Diehard you guys!

Zombtober Week #3 - Four 40mm Zombies

Huzzah! The last of the 40mm Zombies are finished.

I went with a more contrasty, for me any way, style with these. I decided noy to do highlights on the pink robe after the issues I had with the flat surface of the survivors coat.

I hope the checks on the shirt work for you. For some reason I wanted to snazz him up, I think that is part of why I couldn't get anybody finished last week. I also played with a splatter technique. I feel like this one worked a little better than one I had tried several batches earlier, but I still need to work on my weathering technique.

I need to get cracking on so many things. Hope you paint flows and your brushes keep their points.

Paint Table Staurday (Friday Night) - You must WIP it!

Hi All,

Well it's Saturday in certain parts of the world.

I've been busy/mopey. Found out I'm going to lose my tooth and then they were worried I was on the verge of having a heart condition because of my left shoulder, side of face issues.

Clear bill of health, normal EKG, although there was an unpleasant conversation about the effects of Brain tumors on facial nerves. But we seem to be in good shape.

Sorry, your here for pictures of little men. Right!

Above are those 40mm zombies. I missed last week for Zombtober, seems to happen every time I start to assembly line paint. There are not finished, but are a wash and a couple of details away.

Basing gunk on the 20mm metal Lizard men and remaining 1/72 plastic goblins.

I decided to was on sprue the plastic 28mm GW zombies I got from Stevo. The are underneath a spreu of Gripping Beast Celts I'm planning to paint up as Thugs for my Tzeentch Warband.

I figured, while I had the tub out for the zombies I'd wash the High Elves and Skaven from the 8th Ed. WFB box set I bought awhile back. I thought it was a good deal for the figures and figured to capitalize on the purge due to AoS before these became "rare" and "OOP".

I also received my first big box Kickstarter in the mail today. Blood Rage. I'll show it off soon.

Another Cross Country meet in the morning for the boy. Wish him luck.

EDIT

I keep on forgetting to welcome Brummie to the blog. He runs Brummie's Wargaming Blog and is also running the Zombtober festivities. Go check him and the other Zombtoberers out.

Paint Table Saturday 101 - Still Zombies and Little Orcs

Hi All,

Not super productive this last week.

Asecond layer of grey on the zombie flesh and then I got out all the various 20mm greenskins in various levels of completeness.

Hoping to get at least one Zombie and or Orc done tomorrow; but I have a kid party, track practice and a lot of tidying to do to set up for my Talomir game.

Happy painting.

Diehard Miniatures Kickstarter is LIVE!!!

Hi All,

I just finished my pledge for this Kickstarter, Diehard Miniatures: Oldhammmer Fantasy Miniatures

I am super excited about this project. The sculpts look amazing and I didn't want to have the same kinds of regrets about this that I have about not buying certain things from a certain company before they shit canned the whole thing.

I've got to get my rear in gear to play out the next Talomir battle.

Orctober - First Orc - Plastic Black Orc

Hi All,

Here's my first entry for Orctober 2015:

You may all remember this figure, I want to say my brother gave it to me, but I'm not sure why he had it. It came out okay but the way I color blocked it originally may have obscured the detail. That baby skull on his belt was particularly problematic. After looking at some pictures of real horns I'm glad I tried grey colors for the horns this go round.

This is what he looked like before I started him this go round:

Scary! Again reminds me why I hate white undercoat.

Hopefully I'll have more soon. I want to finish those half done 20mm (1/72) Orcs now.

Zombtober - First Survivor - Madonna with Knife

Hi All,

I finished this earlier today, but we had a shake out workout and then I was too busy watching Fear the Walking Dead to post.

She turned out alright. The Grunge wash is not quite where I want it to be. Somehow I didn't get the black portion of it right. But it still does the trick of softening my heavy handed highlights.

Showing you the back is mostly an exercise in self flagellation. I struggled with painting texture into the back of the jacket. The detail is pretty soft. I do like the detail I painted in her hair, the top and back of her head are smooth, only the curls are sculpted.

I have and Orc on the table as well, but couldn't get him finished for Orctober.

Paint Table Saturday 100 and Zombtober 2015

Hi All,

Just a quick one before Cross Country.

These are the last of the 40mm Zombies and Survivor that weren't qualified for Curt's challenge because they had already been started. The survivor I call "Madonna with Knife". She looks like the Virgin Mary to me.

She was done using the sloppy drybrush in successive layers that I decided I didn't like. The Zombies look like they got the first layer of grey.

So in addition to Orktober, I'm trying to participate in Zombtober (I may be the only person who includes the b). I think you just need to post a finished Zombie/Survivor every Sunday in October.

I also plan to do Orctober, but forget what the rules are.

Later.

Some used book finds and Orktober.

Hi All,

This week has been kicking my butt. The running program started at my son's school and participation has been very heavy. The kids are trying to win an extra P.E. session for their class.

Not much on the hobby front since I finished those Bugbears, but I wanted to show you some more books I found up in Flagstaff last week.

I'm back again to buying things as I see them, the pendulum has swung away from shunning everything I see. The Army books are obviously Mid - New Hammer. I wasn't sure what was going on with the 40K stuff, there's only so much research you can do on the phone in the store, but I gather that the Battle Manual was a bridge between RT and full on 2nd Ed. 40K. So 40K 1.5 I guess. Dark Millenium was a separate box expansion. I'm not sure how useful the book is without all the spell cards etc. I see one can buy some of the parts on ebay though.

I haven't had a chance to read through these. They join the pile of shame for now.

Orktober! WAAAGH!

Over at the Emporium of Rogue Dreams. It's where all the cool kids hang out and talk Rogue Trader smack.

I just happened to buy these bad boys off of Blue the other day, so I thought I'd give it a whirl.

I think I got a line on the missing back banner for the Runt Herder, only just realized that Gazghkull himself should have one too. I'm going to try and see what I can scrounge up on the Oldhammer Trading Company. I also need some bits for a couple of other projects.
